Edinburgh

In an attempt to play catch-up on my blogs before the end of the year (T minus 6 hours!), I am posting several photo blogs to bring myself up-to-date.

First, to finish up on our trip to the UK this summer..

Edinburgh, capital city of Scotland, is my favorite Scottish city.  It has been a few years since my last visit so my mum, Mary and I headed up there for a couple of days.

Edinburgh is home to the annual Fringe Festival (https://www.edfringe.com/), which is a lot of fun, and it is a great place to celebrate Hogmanay (although you will freeze and possibly be trampled to death. Ah, memories.).

No trip to Edinburgh is complete without a trip to the castle.  Even if you've been there a million times before.

Mary was super interested to learn about medieval musical instruments.

The optical illusion museum (Camera Obscura http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/) is well worth a visit and is very close to the castle entrance on the Royal Mile.  This is a definite if you are traveling to Edinburgh with kids; it is really one of the best attractions and Mary had a blast.

Funky mirrors still amuse me.

If you consider yourself a real tourist, you could spend all day walking Royal Mile.  Don't forget the whisky.

Mary had her caricature drawn...

...and she bought a sword.

We found this cute little hidden-away cafe and ate the most delicious blueberry cake.

The Childhood Museum is worth a (short) visit.  Bonus:  entry is free.

Mary had some fun on Princes Street.

Photography was not permitted at Mary King's Close.   You can tour this hidden neighborhood, buried under the current structures on Royal Mile.  Click here if you want to know more:

Up next.... Blackpool!
